Prom season renews concerns

By Lindsey Kovacevich

ROSEBURG - Every year around prom time, the number of teens who die in impaired driving accidents seems to increase, and the tragedy can have far reaching implications.

"I cant begin to explain to you the hurt and loss that I feel deep in my soul right now, and I'm sure the loss of my precious baby sister will never leave my heart. But I will not let myself believe for one second that the loss of my sister was in vain. The things my family have endured have tested the very depths of my faith. And if I can find a way to signify Rachel's death with life, and as God as my witness, I will give it my all."

Those are the words of Mark Merrell, the brother of Rachel, who died in a drunk driving accident back in March.

Unfortunately, this is just one of the many times teenagers have died in this county because of impaired driving.

Mark wants the loss of his sister to be a reminder to all teenagers, the dangers of getting in a car impaired.

"Intoxicated drivers not only put themselves at risk, but they put the whole community at risk. Other people in their car, other drivers, pedestrians at risk. The danger is just too extreme," said Sgt. Dunbar from the Roseburg Police Department.

During prom season, more parties occur which can lead to youth making the wrong decisions.

With the deaths of Rachel and Tony still fresh in everyone's mind, school officials hope students will be safe and be smart.

RHS Vice Principal Larry Rich says, "That's what we need to tell young people today. There is so much you can do. You don't have to drink to have fun, you can show up to these functions and have a good time and have nothing to do with alcohol."

"Rachel is a good example because she was a good kid. One bad decision, tragic, very tragic ended her life and Tony's life."

Making these bad decisions affects not only the people involved, but family, friends and the entire community.
