Douglas County fire agencies chasing lightning fires

By Dan Bain

ROSEBURG - Local wild fire agencies have been chasing fires all weekend after a lightning storm that pounded parts of Douglas County Saturday night.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association's dispatchers were busy sending crews and helicopters to locations as new fires were located on lands protected by the
D.F.P.A.

The people monitoring the new forest cameras kept a watchful eye on the screens to look for any new smoke columns.

Randy Leming, the Dispatch Supervisor for the D.F.P.A. said they had 6 fires that were of any size at all, and so far the biggest was reported to be about 1.5 acres. The fires are in the Tiller area and in the Rock Creek area.

But Leming said with the hundreds of lightning strikes, more are likely to pop up as long as it stays hot.

"Four of the fires are trailed and in the mop up stage and we currently have 2 fires that are burning that we have crews on, " said Leming. "One of them is in the Glendale area, one is in the Days Creek area."

Leming said none of the fires is a major problem, except that some are hard to get to.

"The problem we're having is getting to some of them. A lot of them are a long ways away from the road system so that requires individuals to hike into them and of course the amount of gear they can carry in to work on the fire is minimum versus being able to drive one of the fire engines up to the fire."

Leming said even though all the smoke made it tough to see at times, the cameras have been a tremendous help in locating the fires quickly and allowing their crews to get to them before they become big problems. They'll be keeping an eye out again today for more smokes that might pop up in the forest.

The Umpqua National Forest reported about 7 small fires on their lands, but so far there are none of significant size.
