Port to possibly recieve funding for rail line

By KPIC Web Staff

Congressman Peter DeFazio says he has secured funding to help the Port of Coos Bay purchase the Coos Bay Line from Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad.

DeFazio said Monday he secured language in legislation to fund the 8 million dollars.

CORP has filed to abandon the line, except for a portion west of Eugene that links the line to the main north-south rail line. The closure has crippled shippers along the route that had relied on the railroad to ship their products.

DeFazio originally secured the 8 million to help the port make repairs to a rail bridge on the Coos Bay line in 2005.

Meanwhile, the Coos Siskiyou Shippers Coalition is requesting that the Surface Transportation Board hold a public hearing in Oregon so people can voice their concerns.

Chairman Allyn Ford of Roseburg Forest Products wrote a letter to the S.T.B., asking them to come here to get public input from the people in the area.
