ROSEBURG, Ore. - 34-year-old Keith Cramer of Sutherlin was arraigned Friday afternoon in Pro Tem Judge Bill Marshall's Douglas County courtroom.
Cramer is charged in the death of Michael Smith, after Smith was shot in Cramer's house early on the morning of June 19th. Cramer's attorney for the arraignment Friday, David Terry, said Cramer feared for the safety of himself and his family. "My client was holding onto the weapon, and when this individual aggressively left the couch, and went to grab the person of Mr. Cramer, Mr. Cramer fire one shell into his shoulder," said Terry. Again he never meant to cause his death. He intended to incapacitate him, with a large caliber hunting rifle and unfortunately the victim died." Terry said Smith continually said it was his house, during the altercation. Police said Cramer's wife Christy left the door unlocked for her husband, who had gone to a bar. After discovering the intruder, she and her daughter reportedly went to the bar to get Cramer. Cramer called 9-1-1 twice, the second time to say he had shot the intruder. Smith is survived by a wife and two children. He had traveled to Sutherlin to care for his ailing mother. Witnesses said he was heavily intoxicated and may have been disoriented when he entered Cramer's home. Bail was set for $50,000 by Judge Marshall, and Cramer posted the $5,000 required and was released. |
