A new drive-in opened in Roseburg Monday morning, but this one is a little different.

The new Sonic Drive-in on Northeast Stephens Street doesn't have any inside seating and only a small outside area to sit and enjoy your food and drinks.

However, there are car stalls, like the old days when you could park and eat, and you are waited on by car-hops, on roller skates.

Allen Partlow, the Director of Operations said the customers and the employees have fun working there, and the restaurants have been very popular.

"It kind of hearkens back to the old days of the real drive-in, where people would skate, and come in with their cars and park and talk and visit friends," said Partlow.

The restaurant did a test run this weekend, inviting friends and relatives of workers, to check out the equipment and give the employees some live training.

"Good crew, we've got really a great number of hires here that were just super, probably the best we've had in any of our 4 stores so far," Partlow said.

You don't have to skate to work there but Partlow admits they didn't have any trouble finding skaters in Roseburg. "In most of the stores, they're a little bit timid about skating, but here in Roseburg for some reason, most of the car-hops can skate. We had to kind of discourage them a little bit, until they get a little more practice in carrying the food, but they're not required to."

Sonic is known for its ice cream, drinks and burgers, but especially for the skating car-hops.

This is the 4th restaurant opened by the company, which also owns the Abby's Pizza chain, headquartered in Roseburg. They have Sonic stores in Medford, Central Point, and Grants Pass, and they are working on another one in Springfield.
