UMPQUA, Ore. -- Sheriff's officers have identified the woman who died in a fiery crash Tuesday afternoon west of Umpqua. Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies say a Ford pickup was westbound on Hubbard Creek Road about three miles west of Umpqua when it went across the oncoming lane, hit the bridge railing and flew into the air. The pickup landed on its top on the rocks in the creek bed and immediately burst into flames. Police say the only occupant was 49-year-old Teresa Winter of Coos Bay. She was found dead in the burned pickup. A logging crew leaving their work site nearby, saw the fire and stopped to help. The crew from Brownson Logging in Myrtle Creek put out the fire to keep it from spreading into the nearby brush. County crews were on scene to check the bridge for structural damage, and to repair the railing that was torn out by the impact. Officers don't know what caused the driver to veer off the roadway. The accident happened about 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. UMPQUA, Ore. -- One person is dead from a single vehicle accident west of Umpqua Tuesday afternoon, but a major fire may have been averted. Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies say a Ford pickup was westbound on Hubbard Creek Road about three miles west of Umpqua, when it went across the oncoming lane and flew into the air. The pickup landed on its top on the rocks in the creek bed and immediately burst into flames. Police say one adult female was found dead in the badly crushed and burned pickup. A logging crew, leaving their work site nearby, saw the fire and stopped to help. Mike Brownson, of Brownson Logging said his crew immediately went to work on the fire to keep it from spreading. "They just bailed in and fire trailed it, and got ahold of us so we could get some water on it." Firefighters from Fire District 2, Sutherlin and the DFPA responded, and they say the logging crew did a great job in stopping the fire. It could have easily gotten into brush and trees and taken off, if they hadn't gotten there as quickly as they did. The name of the victim is not yet available. County crews were on scene to check the bridge for structural damage and to repair the railing that was torn out by the impact. Officers don't know what caused the driver to veer off the roadway. The accident happened at about 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. |
