ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A famous umpire in major league baseball came to the VA Hospital to thank America's veterans for their service.

Larry Barnett is a former umpire in the major leagues who has officiated four World Series games, and a record seven American League Championship Series in his career.

Barnett has visited VA hospitals since 1977.

He retired in 1999, and now spends even more time with disabled veterans.

He has visited all 172 VA hospitals in the country, and says that he loves the opportunity to say thank you to those who fought for our country.

"Well, other than my wife and two daughters, this is probably the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. Just the association with veterans to say thank you for your service to our nation. We cant say that enough."

Barnett spent the day Wednesday, walking around the VA campus here in Roseburg, meeting veterans and handing out signed pictures and baseball cards.

He travels one week out of every month to different hospitals throughout the United States.

Thursday, Barnett will be in Vancouver, Washington, and Friday he will go to Portland.
