Smoke fills air around Roseburg
By KPIC Web StaffFarmers and ranchers around the around the area will be burning off their fields in the next few weeks. Smoke filed the air around Roseburg as a result. There's lots of smoke for a short period of time, and fire managers at the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA), try to time the burns so the smoke will dissipate quickly and move away from the populated areas. Tom Fields from the DFPA said, "Usually burn about 10,000 acres a year of different grasslands, and this is the time of year, when we've had good drying going on, that will allow the farmers and ranchers to get a good clean burn, to get rid of those unwanted weeds and fuels that can pose problems in the spring." Meanwhile, Fields said there will be some occasional columns of smoke for the next several days. "So you might see a few columns of smoke here and there where ranchers are getting ready for their spring pastures," said Fields. Fields said they'll keep a close eye on the weather conditions to make sure it has as little impact as possible on the area. There were burns Tuesday in the Garden Valley and Melrose areas as well as the one along I-5 at Wilbur. There will be more for the next several days as conditions permit. |
