Mustangs and Music held over the weekend
By Megan SweeneyA fundraiser held over the weekend at a Garden Valley winery, will help a local organization that rescues horses. Mustangs and Music was hosted at Becker Vineyard to help Strawberry Mountain Mustangs, a horse rescue and rehabilitation center. A silent auction, wine tasting, food and a live performance by Slowpoke were all a part of the night's entertainment. $1,200 was raised in tickets sales alone, and money raised in the silent auction will go to the center as well. Darla Clark says funds are desperately needed at the non-profit organization, and will be used to care for the horses directly.
"All of the donations go directly to the horses, whether for food, farrier care, vet care is obviously a huge one. We hope to raise enough funds to pay off our vet bill, which is about $2,500. Horse rehabilitation is quite spendy."
There's currently about 25-30 horses at the center needing a home.
Clark says they're only taking animals that were either abused or neglected from law enforcement cases, or recommended from a vet.
"When they come in, if their injured or malnourished they're with us until they're stabilized and ready to go out to their new home. That might mean that they need training. If they're not suitable to be adopted because of some training issue, we give them the training they need to adopt them out."
Clark says there's a myth that rescue horses have something wrong with them, and she says that is simply not true.
"I have healthy, young, registered and sound animals who just need a home and haven't found the right home yet. That's all it is, pairing the right person up with the right horse."
Clark says if you can't donate money, you can donate your time and resources to the care center. The horses needing a home were going to be at the event, but due to the rain they weren't there.
