ROSEBURG, Ore. -- UCC Started their new wine program this fall, and the class took a field trip to a local vinyard to apply hands-on experience to their lecture notes.

Saturday was field day for those enrolled in the new viticulture and enology program at UCC.

About 30 students were out at Delfino Vineyards, where they looked at the grapes from the grower's point of view. Groups went out into the field and sampled the fruit.

After their samples are collected, the groups will go back to their chemistry lab, and hope their data will mirror the winemaker's data.

"It gives me the chance to get out there and test it in the lab, and I think you learn more when you're actually working with it, than reading it," said Rhona Meyer, a student in the class.

Jim Delfino picked portions of his crop Sunday to sell to a winemaker.

The winemaker's juice anaylsis will represent a whole tank, and students are hoping their numbers from a sample will agree with the total amount of juice in the tank from the winemaker's anaylsis.

Instructor Chris Lake said, "They will understand whether they are far off from that number, and how did they get far off? Did they get far off? Is it the method they used for sampling? Did they pick the right kind of fruit to put in their sample?"

Saturday was the second field day the class started, and next week they will tour Brandborg Vineyard in Elkton for more sampling and data collecting.
