Man, 82, beaten, left unconscious for two days in pool of own blood
By KVAL Web StaffGRANTS PASS, Ore. -- Two men beat an 82-year-old man while he slept and left him unconscious in a pool of his own blood for two days following a home invasion robbery, according to the Josephine County Sheriff's Office. Investigators believe the crime took place Sept. 23. The victim is unable to remember the attack and remains hospitalized, but officers began to piece together the crime after reports of unauthorized use of the victim's credit cards. The investigation started Sept. 25 when an occupational therapist who works with Alan Curle, 82, went to Curle's home after he missed two appointments over three days. The therapist found Curle unconscious on the floor in a pool of his own blood. Curle was treated for a stroke and hospitalized for two weeks before being transported to a convalescent home to recuperate. On Sept. 27, Curle’s family called the sheriff’s office and expressed concerns that Curle had been the victim of a home invasion robbery and assault. More than two weeks later, the Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit detective was assigned the case after evidence emerged that someone had been using Curle’s credit cards. Early Thursday morning, sheriff’s detectives served a search warrant at 928 SW Bridge St. in Grants Pass, the home of Daniel Harper, 24, and Stephan August, 20.
Investigators say they recovered several stolen items from Curle’s home and evidence of the illegal use of Curle’s credit cards. Investigators believe August and Harper went to Curle’s home on or about Sept. 230 at 1:30 a.m. Harper and August shut the power off to Curle’s home, thinking it would defeat any security system, and then made entry while Curle was asleep in his bed, investigators believe. Curle was beaten unconscious and covered with a blanket while the suspects robbed his home of stereo equipment, money, checks, alcoholic beverages and Curle’s credit cards, investigators believe. Curle, who lives alone, remained unconscious and unable to move until his therapist became suspicious and went to his home to check on him two days later. Harper and Andrew were arrested and charged with burglary, robbery, assault, theft and fraudulent use of a credit card. |
