The annual lighting of the Christmas tree at the Douglas County Courthouse Sunday night, signified the start of the Christmas season in downtown Roseburg.

This year, Santa surprised the little ones by coming in from the roof of the courthouse riding a zipline.

There were dozens of little ones waiting to talk to him, and of course, Santa handed out the traditional candy canes along with Terri Wilcox, Miss Douglas County.

On a chilly but dry night, organizers say this may have been their biggest crowd ever.

Vicki Nielsen, one of the organizers said, "We had a great crowd tonight, it's probably one of the biggest crowds we've ever had for the tree lighting ceremony, the weather was perfect. It was phenomenal, it was a special, special evening."

Organizer Janice Quist added, "The county and city are very cooperative, and Vicki and I, the town center, work together as a great team. It's really not that much work, we've got great support from the Umpqua Community College and Roseburg High choirs."

The downtown area has some promotions going this year to generate more excitement.

"This is the official kickoff for the Christmas season for downtown, and tomorrow we start the 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, which is our greatest promotion downtown. You can enter to win at all the participating businesses everyday, and you can win downtown dollars."

You can use the downtown dollars at all the participating businesses.

Entertainment was provided by the Umpqua Singers and RHS choir, and across the street from the courthouse, a live nativity scene was in front of the First Christian Church, which also drew a big crowd.
