WASHINGTON (AP) - Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley has won a place on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
Merkley, a Portland Democrat who took office last week, had been seeking appointment to the panel, which oversees a broad range of issues, including health care, labor standards and employment, education, student loans, arts and humanities and biomedical research and development.
Merkley also serves on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
He said in a statement that the two committees will play a key role in setting the nation's agenda in areas ranging from health care to education, the environment, global warming and worker protections.
With these two committee assignments, Merkley added, he will be able to work with colleagues and President-elect Barack Obama to get the nation "back on track."
