Governor, bikers attend service in Roseburg
By Dan Bain, KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- Governor Ted Kulongoski made a surprise visit to Roseburg Saturday for the military burial in honor of a former Grants Pass man who died while serving in Afghanistan. Even though there was no publicity about the funeral, the governor and US Congressman Greg Walden attended the service at the Roseburg National Cemetery on Harvard Avenue in Roseburg Saturday morning, for 21-year-old US Army PFC Richard Dewater. Dewater was killed while on patrol on April 15, when he was struck by an improvised explosive device. He attended Grants Pass High School for two years before moving to Topeka, Kansas where his father lives. The Patriot Guard motorcycle riders showed up with about a hundred riders to honor the fallen soldier. Dewater was assigned to the 1st battalion, 26th infantry regiment, 3rd brigade combat team, 1st infantry division based at Fort Hood, Texas. He leaves behind a wife, Valerie, whom he married a month before leaving for Afghanistan last July. A crowd of about 200 people attended the memorial service at the Roseburg National Cemetery. |
