WINCHESTER, Ore. -- UCC is in the beginning stages of having it's own vinyard on campus.

Students were out on Friday setting up the posts that will hold the wires for the grapes that will be grown and used for winemaking.

Director of the Viticulture and Enology program at UCC, Chris Lake, says the students are getting some hands on experience of what it takes to develop a vineyard. "A lot of what's needed are students who participate in helping wineries grow, and part of growing is learning how install a vineyard. Vineyards have to be installed right because they last for 20 to 25 years around here. Students are getting the hands on component."

Lake says local wineries in town have been essential in helping to develop the program.

"Jim Delfino, and Jim is a local grower, he's been growing grapes here for several years. He's also been participating with us in the program. He was helping us develop some of the first seminar courses that were taught before the instructional program began. He's part of the community here that's really contributing to the growth of this program."

Lake says they will start planting the grapes in mid-May.

Once the grapes are ready, the students will be making wine that will be sold as an official UCC wine.
