Storm rips through Douglas County
By KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. - A wicked storm that brought heavy winds, rain and hail roared through central Douglas County Tuesday evening and left downed trees and power lines. The rain and heavy runoff caused creeks and ditches to fill up. The forecasters predicted strong storm cells were a possibility, but it finally hit starting in southern Douglas County, with Canyonville getting hit by heavy rain. The storm continued north through Myrtle Creek, Winston, Green, Roseburg and on north. The gusty winds caused damage all through the area, with a pair of trees toppling onto the Stewart Park Bandshell, which was put up just a couple of weeks ago to get ready for the Music-on-the-Halfshell concert series that is set to start on June 23. There was major damage to the bandshell and to the electrical boxes behind it. Many residents were without power, including the northern part of Roseburg, the Melrose area, North Bank Road, Sutherlin and many other spots around the county The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday evening for central Douglas County. They say there could be more slow-moving thunderstorms with heavy rain, and that means small creeks may briefly top their banks. Urban street flooding is also possible. Officials warn drivers to watch for standing water on streets and roads when the severe weather hits. |
