ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A fire on the South Umqua River's bank near the V.A. grounds caused some problems for firefighters Monday night.

The fire was spotted about 9:15 p.m. Monday on the north bank of the South Umpqua River, right across from the end of Umpqua Street, and Roseburg Fire Department personnel had a tough time accessing it in a brushy area below the bike path.

The fire was in an area that has a homeless camp, with a lot of brush and debris from the high water last winter.

They are still investigating the cause, but speculation is that it may have started in the camp from a cooking or warming  fire.

The fire was blazing just a few feet up the bank from the river, but didn't spread very quickly, and the only access was from the bike path up above the fire.

Firefighters finally got it out late Monday night, but it burned only about 1/8 of an acre, and it probably did more good than harm in clearing out a lot of the poison oak and other brush in the area.
