CANYONVILLE, Ore. - Oregon State Police say they used spike strips to stop a Glendale woman, who was involved in a crash in the Wolf Creek area south of the Douglas County line early Saturday morning.
Police said the woman drove about 20 miles the wrong way on Interstate 5 between Glendale and Canyonville. State Troopers and Douglas County Sheriff's deputies closed down the southbound lanes of I-5 south of Canyonville at two locations, and were able to get her vehicle stopped after she hit the spike strips, according to police. OSP Sergeant Steve Mitchell said they received a report of a crash near milepost 79, close to the Josephine County line, just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Shortly after the report, they received another call of a wrong way driver heading north in the southbound lanes near milepost 80. Officers tried to intercept the wrong way vehicle, which was reported heading up Canyon Mountain south of Canyonville. The southbound lanes were closed at milepost 98 and at milepost 95 to prevent drivers from colliding with the wrong way vehicle. Officers activated their overhead emergency lights to attract the wrong way driver's attention and were standing by at milepost 95 when they spotted the wrong way vehicle approaching their road closure just after 2:00 a.m. Instead of stopping for the officers, driver continued past them, so spike strips were deployed and both left side tires were deflated.. The driver continued northbound in the southbound lanes for about two miles until the car came to a stop on the freeway shoulder near milepost 97, about 2 miles south of Canyonville. Police said the female driver, who was identified as Karena Grim, 35, of Glendale, fled into nearby brush and hid. Troopers, however, found her hiding a short distance away from her stopped red 1996 Pontiac Grand Am. Officers found a seriously injured male passenger lying on the ground outside of the suspect's car, suffering from injuries believed to be from the crash near milepost 79. Glenn Fulp, 55, of Wolf Creek, was initially treated at the scene by Canyonville Fire Department personnel. Fulp and Grim where both transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg. Following treatment, Grim will be lodged at the Douglas County Jail for D.U.I.I., Reckless Driving, Assault in the Fourth Degree and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. Police are continuing the investigation. |
