CANYONVILLE, Ore. -- Canyonville residents want the county to pay for a sidewalk from the casino into the downtown area.

Several residents came to the county to ask for funding to build the sidewalk Thursday.

They say right now, it's dangerous for people to walk along the road, and their hope is that it will encourage people to walk downtown to do some shopping while they're visiting the casino since it's just  a short walk from 7 Feathers.

Pam Landell, a business owner in Canyonville said, "As a business owner and representative of the Main Street Association, we feel that the sidewalk would help bring more people into the town as well as address some safety issues with school children getting to school, elderly people who have limited mobility. Also visitors from the casino coming into the downtown."

Douglas County Public Works Director, Robb Paul, says they've already committed to a 500 foot length of sidewalk south of the casino from Reed Street to Hamlin Road.

Residents want to finish the 1,700 foot stretch, that would go from Hamlin to Long.

Paul addressed some of the issues with finishing that section. "To put that in you have to put a storm drain in, and so that ditch you are going to have to put in a drain and a pipe which is $10 per foot, and you're talking 1700 feet. Then you're going to have to cover the pipe with rock and gravel and pave it."

Public Works will be going ahead with the 500 foot stretch, and will discuss the other portion.

They are still trying to figure out how to save money on the project.
