ROSEBURG, Ore. - A Diamond Anniversary is a rare occurrence, especially these days when divorce seems as common as rotating your tires.

But this is a true love story between Walter Welker, 98, and his bride, Violet Welker, 93.

They were married June 27, 1934 in Portland, in the middle of the Great Depression.

As Walter says, "That was two depressions ago."

Violet says the idea of divorce has never even occurred to her. "Divorce no, murder, many times," she joked.

The key, said Walter, is to communicate and you have to give a little sometimes. "We got through all the tough times because we did everything together, we worked together."

Saturday, family members came from as far away as New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and dozens of friends and well-wishers came to celebrate the monumental 75th anniversary where the couple lives at Riverview Terrace in Roseburg.

Walter is definitely  forever the romantic, and an Elvis impersonator played some of the couple's favorite love songs.

It brought back some fond memories for Walter, who sang the words to his bride as their eyes lit up with the loving compassion that they have enjoyed for 75 years.

Walter and Violet are already looking forward to Walter's 100th birthday party in two years.
