Aranda de Duero Ave. named new drive at UCC
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsWINCHESTER, Ore. -- It may be short, but the paved road leading into the site of the Umpqua Community College teaching winery and vineyard is now named for Roseburg's sister city in Spain. With the unveiling of the new street sign, organizers say it gives Roseburg a tangible link to the sister city in Spain. The newest UCC road is now called Aranda de Duero Avenue. It's on the hillside where the the vineyard is located and the new wine institute building will be above it at the top of the hill. Earl Jones, the owner of Abacela Winery and a big supporter of the sister city project, says even though the street is only about 20 yards long, it is highly significant. "A real link, and its so symbolic with the wine industry and the Southern Oregon Wine Institute here, I love it." Chris Lake, the director of the Southern Oregon Wine Institute, has already started grapes growing on the hillside vineyard and the irrigation system is going in. It will all be part of the classroom for the wine institute. He says this area is similar to the sister city's location in Spain. "What you'll find is that the wine growers here have really explored that and capitalized on it, so you see guys like Earl Jones and Pat Spangler who are out here today, who are embracing European varieties that are coming from Spain, so one of the famous ones that they've been promoting is a grape called Tempranillo." Jones says this is part of the sister city agreement, where we will name something after Aranda de Duero and they will do the same in their city. Roseburg and Aranda are near the same latitude and that has influenced the type of grapes that will be grown here. |
