ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The summer months means great weather, family road trips and rising costs at the gas pump.

Due to summer demand and shorter supply, gas prices are going back up in the Douglas County area.

According to mechanic John Colby, simple maintenance including good air filters and fuel filters can help you get the best gas mileage.

Colby warns that ethanol fuels can hinder some vehicle's miles per gallon. "The ethanol fuel tends to give some driveability problems, so lots of times some additives can compensate for the ethanol fuel."

He recommends people get a tune up once a year to help their car run at it's best.

Colby says fixing the small things now can prevent bigger fuel robbing problems later. "It gets a little harder to start, fuel filters are getting a little more restricted so then your putting a strain on the fuel pumps and next thing you know, they are replacing the fuel pumps and most of the fuel pumps are in the gas tanks."

Making sure your tires are properly inflated and checking your oil levels can also help you save money at the pump this summer.
