Sutherlin Police Chief calls it a career
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsSUTHERLIN, Ore. -- Tuesday was the last day on the job for Sutherlin Police Chief Tom Boggs. Boggs is retiring after more than 14 years on the Sutherlin force. He will be replaced by one of his officers, Mike Mahler, who has actually been on the Sutherlin force a few months longer than Boggs. As for Boggs, he's looking forward to having a little time off but he still plans to be involved in the community. "I haven't really thought about what I'm going to do from here, I was planning on taking a couple of months off and just trying out retirement. I have a couple of things pending in the wings maybe, fill in, some part time stuff, some volunteerism, but I'm just going to try being retired." Boggs says the department is actually in pretty good shape as he hands over the reigns to the next chief. "I think we're in relatively good shape. In this budget, the city council and budget committee let us maintain a status quo, we're not losing anybody. We're in good shape for our equipment, we have good experienced officers." Boggs says he has no regrets and is proud of the cooperation his department has had with other law enforcment agencies in the county. He says all the agencies have worked well together. Mahler, who was hired by the city council earlier this week as the new chief was not in town Tuesday, and will be sworn in on July 9. |
