ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Roseburg School Board has ratified the new contract with the Roseburg Education Association.

The board approved the new 1-year contract at Wednesday night's school board meeting.

The agreement increased the teacher's classroom time to 26-1/2 hours a week and no salary schedule increases.

Superintendent Larry Parsons says its nice to have it done so they can concentrate on education. "It's a relief having this done so we can get back to the business of educating kids. That's what everyone wants, we want to spend our energy doing that, and so for all sides it's a relief to be done with it, and we're thrilled to have an agreement that I think really, as much as I don't like the phrase win-win, it really is a win-win in this case."

The contract is only for one year, so it won't be long before negotiations begin on next year's contract.

"Yeah, that's the downside of a one year agreement, and that's why we don't like one year agreements, but under the circumstances we knew that was probably going to be the case. I would hope that, of course, we'll have to wait and see, but our interest would be to have a multi-year agreement so we're not doing this as often," said Parsons.

Also at the meeting, six students in the district were honored for their academics and citizenship, and given the Roseburg Public Schools McDonald's Restaurant awards.

They included Cameron Campbell of Eastwood Elementary School. Natalie Lehrback was chosen from Hucrest Elementary School. From Sunnyslope Elementary, Katelyn Crawford was named the outstanding student.

Eden Davis was the award winner from Fremont Middle School, and from Roseburg High School, Chris Galbick was named the outstanding student.

Three teachers were also honored with the Crystal Apple Award for their work on the Step-Up program to help at-risk kids in Roseburg High School.
