Police shock woman with Taser after disturbance in Sutherlin
By Glen Beeby KPIC NewsSUTHERLIN, Ore. -- A woman shocked with a Taser by police is now in a Portland hospital, but officials don't know if the injuries were caused by a fall after being shocked or if she was injured in a disturbance prior to the incident. A Sutherlin Police Officer is on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Police were called out to an unsecured medical scene off of Taylor Street where a women was reported to be covered in blood. When police arrived they found a man and a women involved in a disturbance. Sgt. Joe Felix from the Sutherlin Police Department said, "When the officer arrived, he found a female that was injured, the scene was unsecured. He went to go ahead and secure the scene and during that, the female became combative and he was forced to deploy his Taser." Due to a serious head injury the woman had to be transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland where she is currently in stable condition. Police don't know if she sustained the injury before the officer arrived or if the fall to the ground caused it. The case will now go out for an independent review to see if proper steps and procedures were fallowed. "We handed all the information over to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, and they're in the process of doing a review of the incident, and then they are going to get back to us with their findings," said Felix. According to the police report the woman may have been intoxicated during the incident. |
