Roseburg police and fire rolling out of new building
By Katie Boer KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- It's been a process years in the making, but finally the Roseburg Police and Fire Department are fully operational out of the new public safety building. Despite the boxes in hallways and tags still on new office chairs, the police and fire department are finally situated in their new home. The official move in date had been extended on numerous occasions, so for many department officials it's just nice to move in to their new home. Roseburg Fire Department Division Chief Mike Lane said, "The feeling is elation. Finally, we've been planning this building for well over two years and the day that we get to move in is finally here. The planning process has taken years to complete and was designed specifically to be compatible to both the fire and police department needs. Roseburg Police Sgt. Aaron Dunbar says, "The current building provides much more functionality than any previous police building we've had. This facility was built from the ground up as a police and fire department, so everything is where it needs to be." Both departments have more space. The fire department now has enough room for all their vehicles, new individual dorms for firefighters spending the night, a locker room, a brand new state of the art kitchen, an extra storage building for equipment and new exhaust systems in the vehicle bays. Dunbar explained that while the department is operational in the new building, they are still in the process of unpacking boxes. "The majority of the hard work in moving is done, we have just got to make it home now." The police department has brand new administrative offices, carports, armory, interrogation and interview rooms. The former police department building was built in 1928 and had been a grocery store prior to a police department. The previous fire department dates back to the early 1930's or 1940's, and used to be an old car dealership. |
