ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The national average of gas prices reaches a new high for the year, but could it balance out before the holidays draw near?

Gas prices are up a bit but have held steady, dropping just slightly during the past couple days, which could be signaling a chance that the prices could be leveling off.

The national average is up a penny this week to $2.69 and Oregon's statewide average rose two cents to $2.75.

This past October retail gas prices jumped about 23 cents, sending the national average to a new high for the year.

This past Friday the national high exceeded the rates reached during the summer driving season.

Prices have significantly changed since last year.

The slump in the economy sent prices at the pump downward before bottoming out below $2 per gallon last December.
