Storm smashes the Oregon Coast
By Elissa Harrington KVAL NewsFLORENCE, Ore. -- The city of Florence is gearing up for its first storm of the season. Coast Guard officials tell KVAL winds could reach 70 miles per hour by Thursday night. Wave swells could reach 17 feet. These conditions are something some, like Larry Davisson, can't get enough of. "It's rippin' isn't it?" he said. Davisson is spending the storm diving for dungeoness crab. "I figured there was a big storm coming in so I wanted to get into the water before the storm kicked it all up and got the visibility down," Davisson said. Despite warnings to stay off the jetties, Larry Houk took his dogs for a windy walk. When asked what he thinks of the storm, Houk said, "I'm an Oregon native. Of course I love it!" Coast Guard officials, meanwhile, aren't taking the storm so lightly. They're warning folks to stay off the jetties and out of the water. "People aren't ready for it," said Ernie Brent, a Petty Officer with the Oregon Coast Guard. "They haven't quite been through winter yet to prepare. So the first storm of the year takes some people by surprise." Brent said waves can sweep people off the jetties. He says that's his biggest concern on a day like this. "People don't realize how big these waves actually are unfortunately until it's too late sometimes," he says. The Coast Guard asks people to use common sense. Stay inside and wait out the storm. Always be prepared with food and water. They say as for those storm watchers, they should really sit this one out. |
