Hearing set to find out if Brian Brush is competent to stand trial
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsSOUTH BEND, Wa. -- A hearing to determine if a Roseburg man is competent to stand trial for murder is set for early December in a southwest Washington county. Brian Brush, 47, the owner of North River Boats in the Green District of Roseburg, is accused of gunning down his former girlfriend, Lisa Bonney in Long Beach, Washington in front of dozens of tourists and three police officers who were patrolling the area. An effort to formally arraign Brush was put on hold when a court appointed attorney said he had trouble getting to talk to Brush because of mental health issues. The defense asked for a competency hearing, and prosecutor David Burke told KPIC News on Monday that everything is on hold until that hearing on December 10. The state has asked for a mental health evaluation, which prosecutors say has been done, but the results have not yet been released. Meanwhile, Brush has still not been officially arraigned but is being held on $50 million bail in a South Bend, Washington jail. If he is found incompetent, he may be sent to the state facility in Steilacoom to try to get him prepared for a trail. |
