Veteran: "I got teary-eyed"
Dennis Bieak, a Veteran from Pennsylvania came to Roseburg to visit some his old buddies. He told KPIC that he "got teary-eyed" when he saw all the people out honoring the Veterans. By Dan Bain KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- Soldiers carrying the colors opened the Veteran's Day Parade with 70 or more entries behind them, as thousands lined the streets to honor veterans on this national holiday. Marching bands from Roseburg High School and Marshfield High in Coos Bay marched in the parade again this year. Vietnam veteran Dennis Bieak came out from Pennsylvania to visit his Vietnam buddies, and they all marched in the parade. "I got teary-eyed, I really did. It was nice to see all these people coming out here and honoring the veterans and the work that we did." Stanley Davis is a Korean War veteran and was wounded there. He says it's nice to see people out supporting the troops because that's not the way it was when he came back from Korea in 1955. "I got wounded when I was over there, and when I come back, it was different," said Davis. Congressman Peter DeFazio came to the parade again this year, driving his old classic car. Lots of fire trucks were in the parade from several different departments around the county. The parade lasted about an hour, although the jet flyover had to be canceled because of the bad weather. It's billed as the second largest Veteran's Day Parade in the state, behind the Albany parade. |
