Roseburg sees rash of car thefts
By Katie Boer KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- At least five vehicles were stolen in the Roseburg city limits last week, and authorities say that's a huge spike compared to normal numbers. The five vehicles were stolen from residences on Lane and Brockway streets, and in the Hucrest area. The most recent theft was a gold 1990 Honda Accord, stolen off of Garden Valley Boulevard near the Sizzler restaurant this past Wednesday. According to Roseburg police, that number is alarming. Sgt. Aaron Dunbar of the Roseburg Police department said, "I think sometimes people feel safe because this is a small community and we don't have the number of of cars stolen that say, a larger community does. That doesn't mean that we don't have cars stolen here, we don't have burglaries, we don't have houses broken into." Authorities believe there were similarities in the four stolen earlier in the week, but don't believe the lastest car theft is related. Sgt. Dunbar says anywhere from three to four vehicles are stolen a month. "The number of valuables in a car increase this time of year, and so we see an increase in those car break-ins. So, people need to manage their own property and they can do a lot to reduce their own risk." In many cases, stolen cars are just targets of opportunity, but with holidays right around the corner, there are a few easy steps you can take to avoid being a crime victim. As silly as it sounds, simply locking your vehicle doors is the first step. Also, make sure your keys are left out of sight, and ideally not in your vehicle. Don't leave valuables such as purses in plain sight. Often times that only encourages theft. Store holiday gifts and shopping bags out of view or stowed away in your trunk. |
