Top Gun commander talks to Douglas County students
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsWINSTON, Ore. -- Students in local schools are getting an opportunity to listen to a giant in the aviation world this week. Commander Dan Cheever, a commander at Top Gun, has flown for the Navy all over the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Tuesday he talked with students at McGovern Elementary School in Winston as part of the tour through Douglas County. It's put on by the Major General Marion Carl Foundation. Cdr. Cheever shows his Top Gun video to the kids, but his main message is: Get a good education. "I just want them to take away that education is good and they need to get as much of it as possible. At the start of it we played that video and I talk to them about the freedom they have because they live in the United States, and the fact that they need to take advantage of it and appreciate it," said Cheever. Cdr. Cheever says the students ask good questions and he was impressed by how educated they are on international issues. "I find that as you talk to them, and just ask them their concerns and questions, that they get very interested in it very quickly, and the questions, as you heard, are amazing. Some very insightful questions and some real thoughtful kids." Cheever will visit six different schools in all. He was at Jo Lane in Roseburg, Oakland and Sutherlin middle schools on Monday, and went to Coffenberry in Myrtle Creek after visiting McGovern in Winston Tuesday. He will speak at Hucrest Wednesday morning before heading back to Fallin, Nevada. |
