CANYONVILLE, Ore. -- Douglas County Democrats hosted their annual Al Flegal fundraising dinner Saturday night in Canyonville.

Two of the democratic candidates for governor were there to speak.

Former Oregon Governor and former state legislator from Roseburg, John Kitzhaber has decided to run again for the position he held for two terms.

He will face former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury in the primary.

"I think we're in a real difficult time, we've got high unemployment and the state's really hurting, and I think to turn that around we're going to have to fundamentally transform our economy to one that's not subject to these boom-bust cycles. In order to do that, we're going to have to change some significant systems like education and health, energy, and you know, I just think that there's a huge opportunity embedded in these tough times to kind of make Oregon stronger and better, and I have a little on the job experience in the office and look forward to doing it again," said Kitzhaber.

Kitzhaber appointed Bradbury to the Secretary of State's Office while he was governor, and says the campaign will be based on ideas and not personalities.

Bradbury says industry and education are two important issues for him. "I think that this state has an incredible opportunity to develop what I would call sustainable industries in Oregon, and really put us as the sustainable industry capital of the world. So, I also care very deeply that we make sure we educate our kids, and I feel that we're dropping that ball on that pretty seriously right now."

Both candidates say they are against repealing the tax measures that will be voted on in January.

State Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and State Senator Floyd Prozanski were also there to speak at this year's dinner.

The dinner and silent auction, which is a major fundraiser for the Douglas County Democratic Party, was a sell-out at the 7-Feathers convention center in Canyonville.
