ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Police intercepted four pounds of heroin investigators believe was bound for a drug deal in the Roseburg High School parking lot.

Narcotics officers say they found heroin packaged for street sales and worth $75,000 after searching the vehicle of two people from the Los Angeles area.

Police arrested Ivan Banuelos, 40, and Patricia Medina, 33, on suspicion of manufacture, delivery and possession of heroin and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Four children under the age of eight who were with the two were taken into protective custody.

A couple of thousand dollars in cash was also seized.

Police think the drug was being delivered to Roseburg from southern California. Police said the transaction was to take place in the Roseburg High School parking lot, and the heroin would likely have been transported north the major metropolitan areas.

Detective Clayton Ruble with the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team said the bust yielded a significant amount of heroin.

"This is huge," he said. "This is over four pounds of heroin, which is really uncommon. Right now heroin is becoming very prevalent and there's a lot of it in the area."

Ruble said heroin has become more popular as a replacement for pain-killing drugs.

"Heroin is becoming more and more prevalent because people are getting more addicted to pills or prescriptions like Oxycodone, Oxycotin, Vicodin," he said. "That's the same drug category as heroin, and with heroin when they can't get their pills, they'll use heroin subsequent to the use of the pills."
