Girl killed, grandfather pinned under truck in crash
Photo of the scene courtesy Oregon State Police By KVAL.com staffSHANIKO, Ore. -- A pickup overturned on a remote stretch of Oregon highway, killing a 12-year-old girl and pinning her grandfather underneath the truck. Areceli Torres-Lopez, 12, of Umatilla, Ore., was ejected from the truck during the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Theodore J. Travis, 56, of Prineville, was pinned underneath the truck. An ambulance crew from Maupin, Ore., worked for 90 minutes to free him. Travis was taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Ore., with serious injuries, police said. Oregon State Police believe Travis was driving a 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup southbound on Highway 97 around 8 a.m. Monday when the truck crossed the oncoming lane of traffic, hit the far shoulder and overturned. The crash remains under investigation. |
