Formal opening of Roseburg's Public Safety Center held Tuesday
By Katie Boer KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- Its been a long process, but the Roseburg Public Safety Center was officially dedicated Tuesday morning. While the police and fire departments moved in in November, the grand opening of the center was Tuesday, after a process stretching nearly four years. The building involved dozens of people who combined to form a collaborative effort, creating a new home for Roseburg police and fire headquarters and Fire Station No. 1. Roseburg Fire Chief, Jack Cooley, said, "This building is a testament to all of our ideas. We spent a huge amount of time talking to our employees, looking at other facilities, and we incorporated and pivoted and did a great job of incorporating those ideas into a facility that would fit and work best within our community to meet our needs for public safety." The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by the police and fire chief, along with State Rep. Tim Freeman, City Counsel President Rick Coen and mayor Larry Rich, who all spoke at the ceremony, which was held in the fire truck bay with invited guests looking on. Roseburg Police Chief Mark Nickel said, "It wasn't until after they started raising the walls that people actually started convincing themselves that yes, in fact we were going to be moving. I won't say that it was an easy process, but it certainly was an interesting one, and I'm so glad that I was able to be involved. There aren't very many police chiefs around, maybe one, maybe none, maybe very few, that can actually claim they built a brand new facility and I'm so grateful that I'm one of them." The new facility houses 40 police and 38 fire employees and cost $12,275,000 construction costs. The center boasts over 50,000 square feet and is the product of hundreds of ideas designed specifically to meet the the safety needs of the City of Roseburg. |
