CANYONVILLE, Ore. -- This year's Festival of Trees wrapped up it's 2009 edition Sunday at the 7-Feathers convention center in Canyonville.

The Gala Dinner and Auction Friday night was the big event, raising nearly $100,000 for the Mercy Foundation's children's health care programs.

Nearly two dozen decorated trees with lots of extras were auctioned off, going for thousands of dollars to the highest bidders.

Organizers say they expected the  amount of money raised to be down, and it was, but they are still going to be close to $200,000 by the time it's all in.

This year's ambassador child was Alysa Schults, 3, of Winston. She was diagnosed with a serious heart and lung problem, and the Mercy Foundation helped with expenses not covered by insurance.

Alysa's parents told KPIC that they are, "Very thankful for everything they do, especially for us, but not only us but everybody in the community. It's a wonderful thing. They've helped us out tremendously, and families like us, so it's kind of an awesome thing."

Sunday was Family Day, sponsored by KPIC, with lots of kids' activities, including coloring, crafts, face painting, entertainment and of course, Santa was there to talk with the youngsters.

Organizers were happy with the turnout throughout the week, with the Silver Bell Luncheon, the Safari Picnic Adventures and Family Day on Sunday drawing good crowds.

We should have a total amount of money raised a little later this week.
