DeFazio wins again, thanks to generous residents
By Glen Beeby KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- Congressman Peter DeFazio won this year's 'Reuse-A-Shoe' drive by a landslide, thanks to donations throughout his district. For the past couple of weeks, people had been asked to donate their old sneakers for the campaign put on by Nike. DeFazio picked the Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley to receive the prize of athletic equipment from Nike, and employees say it will be a big help for their programs. "All this sports equipment, bats, balls, helps us out a lot because that way kids will tell their friends and more kids will come here, and we will have more stuff to play with," said Triple Play Coordinator, Armond Knight. The congressman has won five out of the last six years, and all the used shoes will be recycled into new athletic courts. The 4th District donated almost 2,200 pairs, which made up over half of all the shoes collected for the entire competition. Lane County had just over 1,000 pairs and Douglas County almost 700. |
