Firefighters: Fire went unnoticed longer than necessary
By KPIC.com staffROSEBURG, Ore. -- An exhaust fan sparked an electrical fire in an apartment early Monday morning, and firefighters said the lack of a smoke detector delayed the response to the fire. Firefighters told KPIC News that if there had been a working smoke detector in the apartment, then the device could have alerted a nearby neighbor to the fire. The fire happened in an apartment addition to a house on Cobb Street around 5 a.m. Monday. Investigators believe the fire started from an electrical problem caused by an exhaust fan that was left on for too long. Residents in the main house didn't realize there was a fire until smoke started pouring in through their vents. Although no one was hurt, the fire caused significant structural and smoke damage.
