By Katie Boer KPIC News and KPIC.com staffWINSTON, Ore. -- A car hit two high school girls walking home from school Tuesday. One girl escaped unscathed, but the other suffered a broken ankle. The accident happened along Highway 99 just after 4 p.m. Police cited the driver, Noble Elliott, 47, on suspicion of careless driving and failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian on a sidewalk. The collision is still being investigated. Police told KPIC News the two girls were walking on the sidewalk in front of the Bi-Mart in Winston when Elliott turned right out of the parking lot. The driver did stop before making a turn but failed to see the two girls. "You got to be aware of all your surroundings as you pull out," Chief Scott Gugel with the Winston Police Deptartment said. "You got to remember that you need to stop before you cross the sidewalk as well, even before you hit the intersection and pull into the roadway. You got to be aware of people walking up beside you and walking in front of your vehicle." Winston police and the Winston-Dillard fire department responded to the scene and transported one of the girls to Mercy Medical Center with a fractured ankle. The other girl was uninjured. |
