GLIDE, Ore. -- Students and facility at Glide High School have had to work around construction for a year and a half, but they're finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Construction crews were already on the campus erecting new buildings that were paid for by a bond levy that was passed by voters in the school district when a fire destroyed a large portion of the school and damaged other sections.

The fire delayed everything, and the school had to buy modular classrooms and hold their sporting events at other locations.

Now things are starting to come together.

"Our goal all along has been to minimize the distractions to the education process, and I think we've done a great job of that," said Pam Maurice, Glide High Principal. "I think the parents have really appreciated the fact that we've been able to continue the education without a lot of distraction from the ongoing construction."

The student food store, which is in the gym area where the fire did a lot of damage, finally re-opened this week. Now students can get snacks during the day, and they were happy to see that back.

"It's awesome to have the store back," said Kristine Haug, Glide High School instructor, "and I think you'll find that the students enjoy having the store. It's kind of the beginning of moving back into the new building."

Not only will fans at basketball games have the snack bar to get treats during the games, but Tuesday night was the first time since the fire they've had restrooms for the public available in the gym.

Athletic director Al Skinner said they're starting to get some of their facilities back.

"The weightroom that I'm planning on moving into in about a week and a half, hopefully by the semester break, we'll have all of our weights moved over there and I'll be able to start a new class in there which will be really nice," he said, "and the auxiliary gym is something that's really exciting. Everything is on track and we're excited, and its going to be worth it all in the end and we're delighted with the progress they're making."

The auxiliary gym will allow the wrestling team to have a home, and it can be used for basketball and as a multi-purpose room for other events.

Maurice said there is still some work to be done, but they're hoping everything is completed by the end of March or early April. She said even though it's been inconvenient, everybody has been able to work around the construction.
