'He knows he's wanted and he doesn't feel he has anything to lose'
By Katie Boer KPIC News and KPIC.com staffWINSTON, Ore. -- A wanted man behind the wheel of a 1989 Nissan sedan and armed with a dagger and a sword led Douglas County Sheriff's deputies on a 100 mph chase in Winston, Ore., Thursday afternoon before crashing his car on the side of Interstate 5.
"When we have a subject like this who is causing so many problems because he knows he's wanted and he doesn't feel he has anything to lose," Deputy David Bartley from the Douglas County Sheriff's office said, "he will continue to cause those problems unless we do everything we can to get him to answer for his crimes."
In a way, the chase started around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday when deputies responded to the Kelly's Corner Chevron gas station to a report of a man who filled 'er up -- then drove off as the gas station the attendant walked to the driver window to get paid.
The suspect sped off and caused the attendant to tumble to the ground, scraping one of his arms.
Based on the vehicle description and description of the driver, deputies identified the suspect as Michael Gould. Deputies later located Gould's vehicle at a residence in the 12000 block of Hwy 99 South but they were unable to locate Gould.
The next day, deputies spotted Gould driving the same vehicle, a gray 1989 Nissan two door, on Hwy 99 South near M Street.
Deputies attempted to stop Gould but he fled onto Hwy 42 and then south on I-5. Deputies pursued Gould south on I-5 at speeds in excess of 100 mph. "There was two attempts at spike stripping and a second one was somewhat successful and then the vehicle crashed off to the side of the road," explained Deputy David Bartley. "No one was injured. There were two dogs in the vehicle, they weren't injured and the suspect was taken into custody." The driver avoided both strips -- before he crashed his car on the side of I-5 at milepost 110. Gould, who was already on probation, was found in possession of a dagger and sword, along with a stolen checkbook and other stolen property items. The sheriff's office told KPIC News that Gould was wanted for multiple crimes and likely more charges will be added daily. |
