SUTHERLIN, Ore. - Students from Eastwood Elementary were in Sutherlin Thursday morning to kick off the Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby with their annual kids day.

Trophy fish were brought to Cooper Creek by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

After the fish were released into the lake, students had a chance to go out with a guide and see what they could catch.

Kristina Ikola, a school teacher from Eastwood explained their school had "A big focus on ecosystems, so the kids get to experience it hands-on through multiple projects."

Several students even caught fish that were over a foot in length.

Derby chairman Dale Roberts says the entire event is meant to bring awareness and raise money for fish enhancement on the Umpqua River.

"Even if these kids don't become fishermen, they are going to fall in love with the whole idea of having fish in our river."

The derby will continue Friday morning with fishing on the North and South Umpqua Rivers.
