ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - A Coast Guard helicopter crew has rescued a surfer in distress off Indian Beach near Cannon Beach, Ore.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Littlejohn says the Astoria Coast Guard station responded to a Thursday afternoon call from Cannon Beach police about a male surfer who appeared to be in distress at the north end of the beach in Ecola State Park.

The helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer, who secured the man in a hoist so he could be lifted aboard. The surfer was transferred to the park and Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue took him to Providence Seaside Hospital in Seaside.

The surfer was not identified.
