Jazz Night comes to Roseburg

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The pace of the music is a little slower than what you would normally hear at the Zoo Tavern.

Rather than playing the latest pop hits, Wednesday nights are meant for the soothing sounds from the past as the Storyville Jazz Band has been playing in Roseburg for more than a decade.

Some members have been involved in music for a living, but Llyod Smith says this gig gives them the most freedom. "Never really had a chance for years to do something for myself for the fun of just doing it for myself," said Smith.

"This is the one thing I can do for me, you know, it's a lot of fun for me and I don't have all of the responsibilities that I do at school," said John Pecorilla.

The five member band only plays for the tips and their unofficial 6th member, Maggie Smith helps collect them."Well, I go around and just kiss all the men on the cheek, get the money from them, tease them, you know," said Smith, "and they know because the band don't get paid, only what I pick up and give to them see, so it's fun"

As a former big band singer herself, Maggie loves the way these old tunes can take everyone back.

Even the bartenders don't mind the change of pace that comes with the jazz night.

"We are kind of known for the younger crowd and it's nice to bring in that little older crowd. They are polite, respectful, nobody is bossy, it's nice."

For anyone who loves good music this might be the thing for you, just don't get lost down memory lane on your way home.
