WINSTON, Ore. - Two people in the Winston area were honored as citizens of the year last night for their contributions to the community in front of a sold-out crowd at the Winston Community Center.

The Winston Dillard Area Chamber of Commerce's 32nd annual First Citizens Banquet recognized the top man and woman in the community, an anti-drug group of young people for their civic contribution, and they gave out a humanitarian award to a woman who organized the local farmers' market, plus they recognized two student first citizens.

This year's female First Citizen was Nancy Beiter  for her involvement in community and volunteer organizations.

"I do not deserve this award," said Beiter.  "I do not do any more than most of the people in this community, but I thank you from the very bottom of my heart. I moved to Winston full time about 6 years ago, and I've definitely found the community of my heart."

The male First Citizen for 2010 was Walt Taylor, who is known for his kindness and generosity, and serving on several boards, as well as playing the Taps for many military funerals and memorial services.

"You've got to give back to your community," said Taylor.  "The more you give, the more you get.  I know it's true, and I just want everybody to know that I love everybody here."

Two Douglas High School seniors were honored as Student First Citizens. The female was Megan Smith, who has a 4.0 grade point average. The male was Matt Williams who has 3.95 accumulative G.P.A.  for his high school career.

The Civic Award was given to a group called Teens Against Drug Abuse, made up of 30 middle and high school students that carry the  drug-free message to the youth of the community.

Jill MacGregor was named Humanitarian of the Year, for her work in making the Winston-Dillard Farmers Market a success.

The guest speaker was Tim Euhus, a former National Football League tight-end and graduate of Oregon State University, now a coach at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis.  He spoke about how his faith got him through some tough times in his pro football career.

About 150 people attended the event Monday night at the Community Center..
