ROSEBURG, Ore. -  The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Roseburg has a new flagpole thanks to a lot of volunteer work and donations from the community.

Friday afternoon, the V.F.W.  and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Patrick W. Kelley Post #2468 dedicated the 3 new flag poles that will fly the U.S. flag,  with the Oregon flag on one side and the P.O.W. flag on the other side. Members of each of the service branches were there to participate in the ceremony, and the Roseburg High Choir sang the national anthem.

The ceremony marked the 78th anniversary of the V.F.W. Post in Roseburg.

"The flag is a symbol of liberty and freedom   around the world and throughout our history . more than 1-million men and women have died defending it. Freedom is not free," said Bert Key, the Oregon V.F.W. Department Junior Vice  Commander .

Post Commander Mike Eakin said the V.F.W. Post  was founded in Roseburg in 1931. "War veterans came together  here in Roseburg to start a Veterans of Foreign Wars Post," said Eakin. "This post was named after Captain Patrick W. Kelley a decorated veteran of the First World War. I can't help but think that the sole purpose of starting this post was to have a place to assemble and reminisce with like-minded veterans of days gone by, and also further the cause for veterans and their families."

A plaque honoring Patrick Kelley will be mounted on the monument in front of the flag poles.

About 50 people turned out for the ceremony Friday afternoon,  including State Representative Tim Freeman, County Commissioner Susan Morgan, former State Representative and World War 2 veteran Bill Markham, and Roseburg Mayor Larry Rich.

Eakin said most of the materials for the flag poles and the concrete slab were donated, and many  members of the V.F.W. volunteered their time to construct the poles.
