Coast Guard retracts bar restriction
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsWINCHESTER BAY, Ore. -The people of Coastal Douglas County voiced their opposition of restricting their local bar and the United States Coast Guard, Station Umpqua River listened, now extending their navigation area. Sighting safety concerns, the Coast Guard initially restricted the Umpqua River Regulation about a mile up the original cut-off, back in December of 2009. What was supposed to be used sparingly, was initiated at least a dozen times before residents became concerned with the affect it would have on the local economy. It was at a public meeting in February that citizens addressed these issues with the Coast Guard, who then agreed to reconsider the restriction. "The community is very pleased with how it's going and the end result," said Joe Coyne, a resident of Winchester Bay. He added, "It took a little time but we were able to convince the Coast Guard that they should take another look at this issue, they did, willingly and we got an amicable settlement." Local residents like Coyne said the restriction cut off access to high use fishing areas for recreational boaters and that moving the line back down the channel would not likely put boaters in jeopardy. "We have a very tough bar and you don't have to cross that bar, all you have to do is just go to Social Security Beach, it's called or Half Moon Bay and you'll be able to get some crabs, and go fishing and you'll be same there. And if the Coast Guard feels that it's dangerous, they can close it," said Coyne. The restriction charge should become official within the next week. All comments and questions should be directed to Lt. Kion Evans in Seattle. (206)220-7232. |
