Unruh grants benefit arts in Douglas County
By KPIC-TV StaffROSEBURG, Ore. - More than a dozen non-profit groups benefited Thursday, from grants handed out from a fund for arts organizations, created by a retired Roseburg doctor. The Dr. John and Betty Long Unruh Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation awarded more than $36,000 to 16 non-profits Thursday, at the Umpqua Valley Arts Center in Roseburg . The awards ranged all the way up to $3,500 for the Umpqua Valley Arts Association and $3,200 for the Riverbend Live group in Winston that puts on a 6 week children's drama camp each summer. The chairman of the Unruh Board of Directors, Ken Ellis, said their aim is to help projects that are dealing with the arts, because many times, their funding is overlooked. "These organizations do wonderful work in this community and primarily this trust is for the arts, so that we can cover things that are overlooked a lot of times because there just isn't enough money to go around," said Ellis. Dr. Unruh is a retired ophthalmologist , and a long time resident of the area, who works with a local advisory committee to decide which programs to support. Since Dr. Unruh established the fund with the Oregon Community Foundation in 1997, he has awarded nearly $700,000 to non-profit groups in the community. Most Popular |
