DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Volunteers from Americorps have been doing work in the county for a couple of weeks.

The team has been working at the Alder Creek Children's Forest outside of Canyonville.

For the past three weeks they have been building new trails throughout the facility and putting up new structures.

One of the volunteers says this is a great  way for young people to  experience something new. "It's a great opportunity. People sort of at a transitional point in their lives, to get around, see the country for very low cost and volunteer get their hands dirty."

The group has spent the last three weeks camping and working on site.

All those who volunteer are 18 to 24 years old and coming from the east coast, none of them have ever been to Oregon. "It's really beautiful. It's a lot like Maine, a lot of wilderness, a lot of wildlife. There is always something new to look at and find, and I really like it here."

The group will finish up this week before heading to Washington State to work on another project.

Once they finish their 10 months of service, volunteers will receive $5,000 for college and a certificate of service from congress.
